Westboro – Responsibility & Shout Let it all Out

God Hates Canada (A Westboro Baptist Press Release in late July)

I read that and thought: this is when Loving Your Enemies becomes the hardest thing in the world to do in my opinion. They insult a whole country (vicious generalizations), they hurl insults and hateful speech, they call names like schoolyard children, they mock the death of a young man in Canada (whom they are also going to picket his funeral), and are fueled by hate as far as I can tell (masquerading, only in language, as love).

My problem with this cast of crazies is they use religion and the name of God to hide their responsibility and hatred for each and every thing they get involved in. They make it seem like ‘this is God’s plan’ and that they have nothing to do with it…yet they are responsible for 100% of their own actions – and using God as a shield of some sort and shaming His name – well that’s all window dressing.

They have excuses for their behavior, no doubts. They figure they are ‘prophets’ (nice for the ego), love is not for everyone (justifies their hatred), God is judging whoever is against them (again, nice delusional ego boost), They don’t have to listen to anyone (since they are self perceived prophets), rejoice in being persecuted (even if for a non just cause and wrongful behavior), and basically like to grab any attention they can (people need attention- a common human trait they go overboard with).

It’s hard to say but the only thing that will change them is that what they are not used to – love. These people need some serious hugs and compassion thrown their way – someone to listen to them and to show them – people care about you. I am guessing they live off the hate they can muster up (a control tactic) and then feel renewed when they think they have done something ‘good’ by being disliked (their reward according to this scripture).

This is why ‘Loving Your Enemies’ is the key component here and the message of a God that desires peace, not hell on earth. It is the hardest thing to do in the situation – because even in me my heart is angry after reading their site. But hatred does not change hatred – love does.

I would like to request all people that read this – that may live near this band of mis-lead sheep whom God loves – to love them and not return hatred for hatred. Picket them with signs of love and compassion – like how they picket in hate. Never get angry with them – but stay on course until love can show its real power…a power they have forgotten and have grown cold to.

We cannot change a situation by being that same situation – you need to become the change you seek – this is the message of the gospel in a nutshell.

  1. God hates Canada, hmmm. I knew he was going to get around to the Great White North sooner or later. Canada’s been passing under God’s radar.:-) The Westboro folks got under my skin the first couple times I saw their act. I pity them now as I would anyone who has fallen into a deep deception. They are miserable people who’s souls get off on hating other people.

I would add that needing to become the change you seek is equal to becoming more like Christ. Jesus would still rebuke the Westboro haters, but would gladly welcome them back if they had a change pf heart.

  2. C.S. Lewis wrote that “Hell … begins with a grumbling mood, and yourself still distinct from it: perhaps even criticizing it…. You can repent and come out of it again. But there may come a day when you can do that no longer. Then there will be no you left to criticize the mood or even enjoy it, but just the grumble itself going on forever like a machine.”

I hope and pray that their grumbling (hate-mongering) is interrupted before it becomes their very identity (if it hasn’t already). Great stuff, SVS.

  3. Isn’t this the church made up of one family only? If so, I say ignore them. They’ve had way too much media attention considering they are such a minority. I think people like this are bolstered by attention and the multi-national attention they have received is enough to make a monster out of a mere irritant.

  4. rejoice in being persecuted (even if for a non just cause and wrongful behavior),

Persecuted in their own minds. I don’t see any members of the Phelps family being hung on crosses, being stoned to death, or being sent to jail for their beliefs (as, IMO, un-Christian as they are).
